Nora sat on the front porch, her back pressed up against the cool brick of the house. Her house, she thought. No matter how many people lived within the walls, this was the house that had been built especially for her. It would always be hers and Charles’.
In her hand she held the small crocus that Charles had given her a few days prior, spinning the stem gently between her fingers as she watched the petals as they moved like a pinwheel would have. She sighed softly, lifting her gaze to look out at the street.
Nora was ridiculously envious of everyone that walked by. They took their freedom for granted, they took their lives as a guarantee, while she was trapped within the property lines. What I would give for that… she couldn’t even bring herself to complete the thought. It was too painful.
She squeezed her eyes shut tightly, shooing the idea from her mind. After a moment, her eyes opened again, and a girl was standing in front of her, just a few feet away. Nora flinched back, surprised by her sudden presence.
“Pardon me, dear. I didn’t even hear you come up. I’m Nora,” she said with a flash of her bright smile.
